Porcelain crowns

If the tooth is too damaged because of caries, break-off or is weak the dentist could suggest placing a porcelain crown on the damaged tooth.

There are different types of porcelain crowns like Cercon (Zirkonium), PFM-Crowns, Di Vinci Crowns, Empress, etc. The difference between them is what kind of material is used, which also affects the crown's strength, durability, appearance.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns (PFM) are both strong and durable, and they are mainly used back of the mouth. A more aesthetic crown is Zirkonium (Cercon) crowns. They provide a metal-free aesthetic solution, and its appearance is very close to a natural-looking tooth.

A porcelain crown covers the whole tooth from the gum line and can be made in different shapes, length, width and shade. Crowns are also effective to correct big irregularities, when a porcelain veneer is not enough. The treatment is painless, and you need two visits to the dentist.

Prepare the tooth for a crown

If the roots and the holds are strong, the dentist will prepare the crown, by grinding a part of the enamels and the dentine.

If the tooth is too damaged and too weak, it could be necessary to insert a root post made of metal into the tooth to give the crown support. In this case the root filling has first to be done before it could be attached to the crown.

Because the crown must fit properly and fit all the other teeth, several impressions have to be made and send to a dental lab. The dentist uses a temporary crown till next appointment.

The second appointment, the dentist will bond the new crown to the root post. Depending on what material is used, crowns would last at least 25 years.
